The ILGM germination guarantee is one of the main reasons we point new growers to ILGM for seeds. In short: if you follow ILGM’s paper towel method and your seeds don’t sprout, ILGM will send free replacements. But “guarantee” doesn’t mean “no conditions.” There are clear rules on how you germinate, how you store your seeds and what proof you keep. This guide walks through all of it in plain English, based on ILGM’s own policy page as we read it on October 31, 2026, so you’re covered before you crack a single seed.

Policies can change, so always confirm the current terms on ILGM’s germination guarantee page before you start.

What Is the ILGM Germination Guarantee?

It’s ILGM’s promise to replace seeds that fail to sprout when you germinate them the way ILGM tells you to. ILGM’s page puts it simply: if you followed its germination method and your seeds didn’t sprout, it will replace them.

What makes it useful is that the rules are written down and specific. You know in advance exactly what counts, which is far better than a vague “satisfaction” promise you can’t plan around.

Who Qualifies for the ILGM Germination Guarantee?

According to ILGM’s eligibility list, you’re covered if all three of these are true:

  1. You used ILGM’s paper towel method exactly as shown in its germination guide.
  2. You have your order number or receipt.
  3. Your seeds were stored properly: cool, dry, stable, and for under 12 months.

And you’re not covered if:

  • your seeds were stored longer than 12 months,
  • your seeds were exposed to extreme heat, cold or humidity, or
  • you used a different germination method instead of the paper towel method.

That last point catches a lot of people. Dropping seeds straight into soil, soaking them in a glass of water, or using a starter plug may work fine for you, but if a seed fails that way, it falls outside the guarantee as written.

Hollywood’s tip: Before you germinate anything, snap one photo of your seed pack next to your packing slip and order confirmation, then take a quick photo at each step. It takes two minutes, and if you ever need to file a claim, you already have everything ILGM may ask for.

How Does ILGM’s Paper Towel Method Work?

ILGM’s germination guide lays out the method step by step, and ILGM also emails instructions with your order. Here’s the shape of it, in our words:

  • Gear: thick unbleached paper towel, two plates of the same size, a spray bottle of clean room-temperature water, a label and pen, and a dark, warm spot.
  • Set up: label the plate with the strain and date, spray a paper towel until it’s evenly damp (not dripping), lay it on the plate, and space your seeds out on it.
  • Cover: lay a second damp towel on top, then flip the second plate over the first like a lid.
  • Keep warm and dark: ILGM recommends roughly 70–85°F (20–30°C).
  • Check once a day: lift the lid every 24 hours, mist if the towel is drying out, and don’t fuss with the seeds more than that.
  • Plant when the taproot shows: ILGM says most seeds show a white taproot within 48–72 hours, though some take longer. Once it’s about ¼–½ inch long, move the seed, taproot down, into your growing medium, handling it by the shell, never the root.

ILGM’s own guide suggests photographing each step, since you may need it as proof. We go deeper on timing, planting depth and troubleshooting in our full guide on how to germinate cannabis seeds.

What Should You Do If Your ILGM Seeds Did Not Germinate?

First, don’t give up too early. Some seeds simply take longer than 72 hours. Keep the towels damp and warm for several more days before you call it.

Then run through the most common causes ILGM itself flags:

  • Towel too wet: soggy towels starve seeds of oxygen. Damp, not dripping.
  • Towel too dry: if the plates aren’t sealed well or the room is dry, towels dry out and germination stalls until they’re moistened again.
  • Too cold: a cool cupboard in winter can slow things down a lot. Find a warmer spot within ILGM’s range.
  • Too much handling: lifting and poking seeds several times a day can damage a fragile new root.

If seeds still haven’t sprouted after you’ve given them a fair chance, that’s when to file a replacement request.

What Do You Need to Submit for ILGM Replacement Seeds?

ILGM’s page splits the paperwork into two levels.

Always required:

  • your order number or receipt.

Also required if more than 30% of your seeds failed, or if this is your second (or later) replacement request:

  • a photo or video of the seeds that didn’t germinate,
  • the germination method you used,
  • your packing slip and order confirmation, visible in the photo, and
  • a clear photo of your setup.

That’s why the photo habit in our tip box matters. If you only learn about the evidence rule after half your seeds fail, it’s hard to recreate.

How Do ILGM Replacements Work?

Per ILGM’s policy, the process is:

  1. Submit a request through ILGM’s contact form, with your documentation.
  2. ILGM reviews it to confirm you’re eligible.
  3. Replacements ship free. You get the number of seeds that didn’t germinate plus one extra, in the same strain when possible, or a suitable alternative if that strain isn’t available.

ILGM’s page also says that if anything is unclear, you should reach out to support before you submit. ILGM’s support page lists an AI assistant around the clock, live chat on weekdays during business hours (Eastern), and email.

How Do You Store ILGM Seeds So They Stay Covered?

Storage is part of the guarantee, so treat it like part of the grow:

  • Cool and stable: a drawer or closet away from heaters, windows and appliances works for short-term storage. Avoid places with big temperature swings, like a car, garage or attic.
  • Dry: keep seeds in their original packaging, inside a sealed container. Moisture is the enemy.
  • Dark: light and heat age seeds.
  • Use them within 12 months: the guarantee doesn’t cover seeds stored longer. Buy what you plan to grow this year rather than stocking up for “someday.”
  • Write the date on the pack when it arrives, so you always know where you stand.

We cover longer-term options in our guide to storing cannabis and seeds.

Is the ILGM Germination Guarantee Worth It?

For a beginner, we think so. Your first grow already has plenty of variables: light, watering, temperature, feeding. A written replacement policy removes one of the most frustrating ones, which is paying for seeds that never pop.

Two honest caveats:

  • It covers germination, not the whole grow. If a seed sprouts and the plant struggles later because of overwatering, heat or nutrient problems, that’s a growing issue, not a germination issue. Our cannabis seedling care guide helps you through that stage.
  • It rewards following instructions. If you prefer another germination method, that’s fine, but know you’re stepping outside the guarantee.

Independent reviewers are mixed on how smoothly claims go, as we cover in our full ILGM review. Keeping clean records is the best way to make yours easy.

Where Should You Buy Seeds That Are Covered?

If you’re starting out, ILGM’s beginner seed collection and autoflower collection are good places to start. Our hand-picked shortlist is the best autoflower seeds for beginners: four ILGM autos ILGM labels Beginner, short and indica-dominant, such as Northern Lights Autoflower.

Before you buy, check your state’s rules. ILGM ships within the US, but you’re responsible for following your state and local law.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ILGM guarantee every seed will germinate?

ILGM guarantees replacements for seeds that don’t sprout when you follow its paper towel method, keep your order number and store seeds properly for under 12 months. It isn’t a promise that every seed sprouts; it’s a promise to replace the ones that don’t, on those terms.

What if I planted ILGM seeds directly in soil and they didn’t come up?

ILGM’s page lists “a different method was used instead of the paper towel method” as not covered. If you want the guarantee, use the paper towel method.

How long does ILGM say germination takes?

ILGM’s guide says most seeds show a taproot within 48–72 hours, though some take longer.

How many replacement seeds does ILGM send?

The number that didn’t germinate, plus one extra, shipped free, in the same strain when possible or a suitable alternative.

Do I need photos to claim the ILGM germination guarantee?

Your order number or receipt is always required. Photos or video of the failed seeds, your method, your packing slip and confirmation, and your setup are required if more than 30% failed or it’s your second or later request.

How do I submit a claim?

Through ILGM’s contact form, with your documentation. ILGM reviews it to confirm eligibility.

Are seeds older than a year covered?

No. ILGM’s page says seeds stored longer than 12 months aren’t covered.
