This is our complete cannabis grow guide: every step of a home grow, from checking the law and picking seeds to drying and curing your first harvest, in plain English. Read it top to bottom for a full course, or jump to the stage you’re in right now. Each step links to a deeper guide with checklists, troubleshooting and FAQs.

Hollywood’s Grow Guide is named for my dad, Hollywood. He was a cool dad with a real passion for exploring medical marijuana and for growing it where it’s legal. This site carries that on: we teach adults how to grow legal cannabis at home, the honest way. When it’s time to buy seeds, we recommend ILGM, and we’re an ILGM affiliate. We’ll always tell you that straight.

How Do You Grow Cannabis at Home? The 12 Steps

Here’s the full path. Each step is a short summary; the linked guide goes deep.

Step 1: Check the law and plan your grow

Before you spend a dollar, confirm that home growing is legal where you live, how many plants you can have, and whether your lease or HOA has a say. Then pick indoor or outdoor, choose a space and set a realistic budget.

Step 2: Choose the right seeds

For a first grow, most people do best with feminized autoflowers: no males to weed out, no light-schedule switch, and small plants. Feminized photoperiods are the next step up when you want bigger plants and more control.

Step 3: Set up your grow space

Indoors, a grow tent makes everything easier: it’s lightproof, reflective, and built for a fan and filter. A 2×2 or 2×4 tent is plenty for one to two autoflowers.

→ Grow Tent Setup: Step by Step

Step 4: Get the light right

Light is the engine of the whole grow. A quality full-spectrum LED sized for your tent beats a bigger cheap one. You’ll also learn light schedules: 18/6 for photoperiod veg, 12/12 to flower, and long days all the way through for autos.

→ Cannabis Grow Lights Explained

Step 5: Control airflow, temperature and humidity

Fresh air in, stale air out, a gentle breeze across the plants, and humidity that drops as the plant matures. VPD sounds technical, but it’s just a way to balance temperature and humidity.

→ Grow Tent Ventilation and VPD

Step 6: Pick a growing medium

Soil is the most forgiving. Coco grows faster but needs more frequent feeding. Hydro is fastest and least forgiving.

→ Soil vs Coco vs Hydro

Step 7: Germinate your seeds

The paper towel method is simple and reliable. Keep things warm, damp (not soaked) and dark, and plant the seed once the root shows.

→ How to Germinate Cannabis Seeds · ILGM Germination Guarantee Explained

Step 8: Baby your seedlings

Seedlings need gentle light, high humidity and very little water. Overwatering kills more seedlings than anything else.

→ Cannabis Seedling Care · How to Water Cannabis Plants

Step 9: Feed lightly and grow big in veg

Start nutrients low and raise them slowly, check pH, and let the plant tell you when it wants more.

→ Cannabis Feeding Schedule · The Vegetative Stage

Step 10: Train for a flat, even canopy

Low-stress training (LST), topping and a screen (SCROG) spread the plant out so more bud sites get strong light.

→ Cannabis Plant Training: LST, Topping and SCROG

Step 11: Flower, watch and troubleshoot

Flowering is where buds form. Know what normal looks like each week, and learn to spot deficiencies, pests and mold early.

→ Flowering Week by Week · Nutrient Deficiencies · Pests · Mold and Bud Rot

Step 12: Harvest, dry, cure and store

Harvest by looking at the trichomes with a magnifier. Then dry slowly, cure in jars, and store cool, dark and airtight.

What Do You Need to Start Growing Cannabis?

A simple indoor setup for one or two plants:

  • Seeds: a small pack of feminized autoflowers, so you have backups. ILGM autoflowers.
  • Grow tent: 2×2 or 2×4 feet.
  • LED grow light sized for the tent.
  • Inline fan + carbon filter for fresh air and smell control, plus a small clip fan.
  • Pots: 3–5 gallon fabric pots for autos.
  • Medium: a light, airy potting mix (or coco if you’re ready to feed often).
  • Nutrients: a simple grow and bloom set. ILGM also sells nutrients and grow kits.
  • Meters: pH pen or test drops, thermometer/hygrometer.
  • Harvest tools: a jeweler’s loupe or pocket microscope, trimming scissors, airtight jars.

If you would rather buy everything at once, ILGM sells complete grow kits, and our Gear hub covers more options.

How Long Does It Take to Grow Cannabis?

From seed to a jar you can enjoy, plan on roughly three to five months:

  • Autoflowers often finish in about 2.5–3.5 months from seed, depending on the strain.
  • Photoperiods take longer because you choose how long they stay in veg, then most strains flower for around 8–10 weeks after you switch to 12/12.
  • Drying and curing add about 3–6 more weeks.

The seed bank’s timeline is an estimate. Your plant’s trichomes make the final call.

How Much Does It Cost to Grow Cannabis at Home?

A small tent setup is a one-time cost you reuse grow after grow. The big pieces are the light, the tent and the fan. Seeds, soil and nutrients are your per-grow costs. Spend on the light and ventilation first, and save on extras like fancy controllers until you know you’ll keep growing.

Hollywood’s tip: Your first grow is tuition, not a test. Keep a notebook: date, water, feed, pH, temperature, humidity and a photo every few days. By grow two you’ll be reading your own notes instead of guessing, and that’s when growers really level up.

The 7 Mistakes That Ruin Most First Grows

  1. Overwatering. Roots need air. Water when the pot feels light, not on a schedule. Watering guide.
  2. Overfeeding. Start at a fraction of the label dose. Feeding schedule.
  3. Ignoring pH. Nutrients get locked out when pH drifts.
  4. Light too close or too weak. Follow your light maker’s distance guidance and watch the top leaves. Lights guide.
  5. No airflow. Stale, humid air invites mold and pests. Ventilation.
  6. Transplanting or topping autoflowers late. Autos have a fixed clock and little time to recover.
  7. Harvesting by the calendar. Check the trichomes. Harvest timing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is growing cannabis hard?

No, not if you start simple. One or two autoflowers in a small tent, good light, light feeding and careful watering will get most beginners a real harvest. Most failures come from doing too much, not too little.

What’s the best cannabis to grow for a beginner?

A feminized autoflower with a beginner label from the seed bank, like the classics in our best autoflowers for beginners list.

Can I grow cannabis without a grow tent?

Yes, in a closet or spare room, but a tent makes light, airflow and smell control much easier for a small cost.

How many plants should I grow the first time?

One or two, and never more than your state allows. Fewer plants means you can give each one full attention.

Indoors or outdoors for a first grow?

Indoors gives you control and year-round growing; outdoors is cheaper but depends on climate, privacy and local rules. Compare both in indoor vs outdoor cannabis growing.

What’s the one thing I should buy first?

After seeds, a good LED light. It decides your yield and quality more than any other piece of gear.

Where can I learn more for free?

Every guide on this site is free, and ILGM’s free Grow Bible is a solid companion read.
