Step 1: Check the law (10 minutes)

Find your state’s home-grow rules, check local ordinances, and read your lease or HOA rules. Also note the federal change to the definition of hemp seeds, currently scheduled for December 11, 2026.

→ Grow Laws by State

Step 2: Make the five big decisions

Indoor or outdoor · Autoflower or photoperiod · How much space · Which light · Real budget (including electricity).

Step 3: Choose your setup

All-in-one kit, tent kit + seeds, or a budget build. Match the tent to the number of plants you are legally allowed to grow.

→ Gear: tents, lights, fans and kits

Step 4: Choose your first seeds

Seed types, what makes a strain beginner-friendly, and how to judge a seed bank. For most first-timers, a well-reviewed autoflower is the easiest path.

→ Seeds & Strains

Step 5: Set up and test (Week 0)

Assemble everything and run it empty for 48 hours. Log temperature and humidity day and night, then fix anything that drifts before a seed goes in.

Step 6: Germinate and grow

Germination, seedling care, watering, and when to start feeding. Start low on nutrients and let the plant tell you when it wants more.

Step 7: Fix problems early

Overwatering, pH, and light stress cause most first-grow trouble. Catch them early with a two-minute daily check.

→ Troubleshooting

Step 8: Harvest, dry and cure

Read the trichomes, dry slowly, and cure in jars. Rushing this step ruins great buds.
